Some programming languages become popular because of platform exclusivity. i.e., when there is no other languages on the same platform or they are put in disadvantage.

It doesn’t really matter how good your language is (in the reasonable bounds) when there are no other languages in the competition.

If the platform grows, the language grows as well.

Examples are:

• JavaScript on the Web

• Objective C and then Swift on iOS

• Java/Kotlin on Android

• Java on old phones

• C#/.NET on Windows
